Omar Johnson, 39, of Canterbury, NH, faces charges of masked armed robbery with a firearm and conspiracy to commit armed robbery with a gun, the Cape and Island District Attorney's Office said in a news release. Police and the FBI arrested Johnson following a traffic stop in New Haven on Friday night, Nov. 25.
Investigators said Johnson and two other men forced their way into the Rockland Trust bank at 257 Edgartown Road in Tisbury just after 8 a.m. on Nov. 17. They all wore dark clothing, the same elderly man mask, and carried guns, reports said.
The robbers tied up the tellers with zip ties and duct tape before stealing an unknown amount of cash, authorities said. They made their getaway using one of the teller's cars, investigators said. They abandoned the car 15 minutes later at Manuel F. Correllus State Forest, which is next to Martha's Vineyard Airport.
None of the tellers were injured in the heist, authorities said.
Police arrested Miquel Anthonio Jones, 30, last week and charged him with accessory after the fact, the prosecutor said. Authorities accuse Jones of helping the burglars make their escape. He pleaded not guilty to the charge at his arraignment, officials said.
Detectives said the men jumped out of the teller's stolen car and into a 2007 Hyundai Elantra with a missing hubcap. Investigators believe Jones was driving that car.
"During a search warrant execution of the 2007 Hyundai Elantra, which was being operated by Jones, investigators located three $100 bills, two of which displayed sequential serial numbers," officials told WCVB. "One hundred dollar bills were among the denominations stolen during the robbery. Also recovered was one pair of white Nike brand sneakers and dark clothing, which are consistent with surveillance videos and witness statements."
Jones was being held on a $300,000 bail, the prosecutor said.
